DOG WALKING

About

All of our dogs need daily physical exercise and mental stimulation. Spend one-on-one time with our pups by letting them explore our grounds with their noses or getting out their kennels into our play yards.

It’s the Leash You Can Do

What’s the best type of leash? “Use whatever you feel most comfortable holding.

Pull Over, Rover!
Constant pulling on the leash makes walks stressful for both of you.

Stay Off the Grass (and Out of the Flower Beds!)
We here at the HSCTX want you to keep your walks toxin-free:

So Nice to Meet You!
It’s great that your friendly pooch loves meeting people during walks-but not so great that she jumps up on them. “The basic idea is to teach your dog how to sit on cue and then require them to sit to interact with people. “No sitting, no greeting. But if she/he sits, she/he gets to enjoy the reward of greeting their friends.” It doesn’t hurt to reward the dog with a treat-or ask the person whom she’s greeting to offer a treat.

Three Things To Bring If you’re planning an extended walk,
  1. Bring water for your dog-especially if it’s warm outside.
  2. Don’t forget the goodies! Walks are great training opportunities. Bring Fido’s fave treats along, and practice tricks and obedience while you’re out in the world. This will solidify your dog’s skills and convince him that going on walks is fantastic fun!.
  3. Don’t get caught without extra poop bags, particularly if you’re going on a long walk.

#1 MOST IMPORTANT thing to remember:
ALWAYS close the kennel door after taking a dog out. Kennel doors must be CLOSED at all times

#2 MOST IMPORTANT thing to remember:
We appreciate you! Thank you for spending your time here at the Waco Animal Shelter You are a #WacoAnimalHero!

3. Remember the dress code - Long pants, t-shirts, closed toed shoes. No shorts, no tank tops, no sandals or flip flops.

4. Dogs with a green dot on their kennel card are easy to walk. If you are a new Volunteer, those are the dogs you should walk!

5. On surgery days, dogs getting surgery cannot eat or go on walks. If you see an orange card on a kennel, do not feed or walk them.

6. We love to have Volunteers help show dogs to the public during curbside meet and greets, but you need to work with a staff member.

7. Volunteers are not allowed to do meet and greets with families who have their own dogs with them, but you can certainly watch!

8. Send up pics and video of the time you spend here with the animals, and please share them all over social media to help us get animals adopted.
