Event Description

Looking for a way to make a difference from your own home? Want to meet other PSU students while volunteering? Join PSU's Student Community Engagement Center to volunteer your time making cards for Store to Door and/or Meals on Wheels to brighten a senior's day!

Both Store to Door and Meals on Wheels focus on ensuring older adults are able to meet their nutritional needs through deliveries of groceries or meals -- but part of their focus is also to help combat the social isolation experienced by so many homebound seniors. The handmade cards we create will accompany the grocery or meal deliveries and provide messages and images of support and care.

We will meet on Zoom and begin our time together  with an explanation and discussion about Store to Door and/or Meals on Wheels and the work they do in the community. Then the rest of the hour will be spent crafting with whatever materials you have at home. You are welcome to draw, paint, write a letter or create anything you feel inspired to make - these crafts will be greatly appreciated by the seniors. Please also note that you will need to send these to Meals on Wheels these yourself, so make sure you have a postage stamp. (There is an option to drop off your homemade cards on campus for those who do not have the ability to send the letters themselves.

Come with your favorite card-making materials! A simple piece of paper and some colored pencils or pens will do just fine, but you are welcome to use whatever 2-dimensional medium you choose!

Zoom link sent to those who register. We look forward to seeing you there!

About our community partners:

Store to Door supports independent living for Portland area seniors and people with disabilities by providing an affordable, personal, volunteer-based grocery shopping and delivery service. Store to Door envisions the Portland area to be a community where all seniors and people with disabilities are nourished, included, and can age with dignity in the setting of their own choice.

Meals on Wheels is a program that delivers meals to older individuals at home who are unable to purchase or prepare their own meals. Part of the program’s mission is to help seniors struggling with social isolation and loneliness.

For 50 years, Meals on Wheels People has been meeting the social and nutritional needs of older adults in our community. They serve delicious and nutritious meals at dozens of dining centers in Multnomah, Washington and Clark counties and volunteers deliver Meals on Wheels and friendly visits to homebound elderly. Meals on Wheels depends on more than 5,600 volunteers annually to help us serve and deliver meals.

This project is open to all Portland State University students and PSU friends/family through the Student Community Engagement Center's #serveyourcityserveyourcampus program.
